Over successive generations, women have played an integral role in the development of the Syrian arts scene. Yet, many of these fearless, pioneering women have gone unnoticed in the mainstream and undocumented by history.
In this exhibition we seek to bring to light some of Syria’s seminal female artists and to highlight their innovative, experimental and impactful oeuvres. In particular, to explore the development that has taken place amongst female artists over the past two decades.
As such, Personal Revolutions is as much about the history of Syrian art as it is about the challenges, triumphs and achievements of these women – without whom the Syrian contemporary arts scene would not be what it is today. Practicing during socio-politically tumultuous years, their works are as a much a documentation of the changing face of a nation as they are of their own inner worlds.
However, to categorise their achievements based solely on their gender would do them a disservice – rather, Personal Revolutions celebrates strong, talented women who are deserving of their mantle as groundbreaking artists in their own right.

نسعى في هذا المعرض إلى تسليط الضوء على عدد من الفنانات السوريات وإبراز أعمالهنّ الفنية و مساراتهنّ الإبداعية لاستكشاف التطور الذي جرى لديهنّ خلال العقدين الماضيين
على هذا النحو، يتمحور معرض« ثورات شخصية » حول تاريخ الفن السوري وحول تحديات وانتصارات وإنجازات هؤلاء النساء ، اللواتي بدونهنّ، ما كان للمشهد الفني السوري المعاصر أن يكون كما هو عليه اليوم. عبر ممارستهنّ الفنّ خلال سنوات صاخبة سياسياً و اجتماعياً ، تأتي أعمالهنّ بمثابة توثيق كبير للوجه المتغير للبلاد ، و هي في الوقت نفسه مرآة لعوالمهنّ الداخلية
لكن تصنيف إنجازاتهنّ على أساس جنسهنّ فقط سيكون سلبياً ومحدوداً ، في حين يريد معرض «ثورات شخصية» أن يحتفي بالمرأة القوية الموهوبة التي تستحق مركزها كفنانة رائدة بذاتها
