Born in 1952, Edward Shahda started studying art in Hama, and graduated from the Department of Painting, Faculty of Fine Arts, Damascus University; in 1976. He participated in a residency in Kalanikov Anatole Workshop in Russia in 1991-1992. Shahda held many solo exhibitions in Damascus and Stavropol, Russia. He also participated in group exhibitions in Beirut, Paris, New York, Russia, Egypt, Dubai, Turkey, Canada, Switzerland, and China. Shahda’s subjects are inspired by folk tales, myths, and local icons; with a focus on the female body. His work is characterised by simplified expression with colour spaces and touches, sometimes surrounded by symbolic elements.
