Born in Damascus, Rashad Mustafa (1911–1995) was a self-taught artist inspired by the Syrian artists of the preceding generation, such as Tawfik Tarek. Working in realism, Mustafa practiced diligently to master the life-like details found in much of his portraiture, still lifes and landscapes. Studying his subjects over long periods of time, he strove to depict every wrinkle, colour and texture visible to his eye.
In 1981, Mustafa received national recognition for his work by being awarded the National Syrian Garter. Active in artistic circles, he was one of the founding members of the Syrian Artists’ Association and participated in their group exhibitions from 1944 onwards.
